Military base in Germany targeted by drones again
Unidentified drones have been spotted flying over the strategically important Bundeswehr military base in Mechernich, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. No one has been identified as responsible for the incident, and police are investigating the case.
A German military base has been attacked by drones again.
German media reported that on the night of August 7, guards at the Mechernich military base, southwest of Bonn, recorded a total of six suspicious drone flights over the facility. This information was later confirmed by the press service of the German Armed Forces - the Bundeswehr Operational Command.
According to reports, police officers from the Euskirchen district of North Rhine-Westphalia were also at the scene during the last drone flight. According to a confidential police report, one of the drones circled law enforcement officers several times.
It is not yet known who was operating these drones. The investigation materials have been transferred to the Euskirchen police, and an official investigation into the incident has been launched.
According to initial assessments, the devices observed over the military base may belong to the Fly-380 VTOL model. This type of drone has a wingspan of about 3.8 meters, a flight range of up to 400 kilometers, a speed of up to 150 kilometers per hour and a load capacity of more than 10 kilograms.
The Mechernich military base is one of the most important logistics centers of the German army. Here, located 130 meters underground, a special warehouse with an area of 30 thousand square meters stores spare parts and equipment for military equipment.
It is also at this base that Bundeswehr specialists engaged in the maintenance and repair of Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems manufactured in the United States work. Therefore, this facility is considered strategically important on a European scale.
This is not the only such case in Germany. On the night of August 5, a drone with explosives and an explosive device was also found near a Ukrainian transport plane at Leipzig-Galle Airport in the federal state of Saxony. The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has taken over the case.
German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt described the incident as a “hybrid terrorist scenario” and said that highly skilled criminal groups were behind it. German police and intelligence agencies are also investigating the possibility that Russia may have been involved in the sabotage.
In recent years, unidentified drones have been observed repeatedly over important military and infrastructure facilities in European countries, including Germany. For example, in September 2025, such flights were recorded near the Zanitsa military base near Rostock and the headquarters of the German Navy. The country's authorities believe that they may have been carried out to monitor strategic facilities.
