Metals Market Awaits U.S. Federal Reserve Decision
The metals market is awaiting the U.S. Federal Reserve's policy decision as investors weigh interest rate expectations, geopolitical risks and their impact on precious and industrial metals.

The metals market is currently fixated on the U.S. Federal Reserve's upcoming monetary policy announcement at the close of July, according to insights from Alpari analyst Anna Bodrova.
Investors are currently weighing the likelihood of the Fed maintaining current interest rates at its imminent meeting, while simultaneously acknowledging a high probability of a rate increase later in the autumn.
Further uncertainty has been introduced by developments in the Middle East. Renewed exchanges of strikes between the United States and Iran have once again impacted oil prices and intensified concerns regarding a potential acceleration in inflation.
Gold is presently trading at approximately US$4,020 per ounce, with silver hovering near US$57 per ounce. Following their recent decline, neither precious metal has exhibited signs of a sustained recovery. Elevated oil prices have bolstered inflation expectations, which could prompt the Federal Reserve to sustain higher interest rates for an extended period.
Market estimations place the probability of a rate hike at the September meeting at roughly 80%, despite current expectations that the U.S. central bank will keep rates unchanged at its current meeting. The prospect of tighter monetary policy continues to be a primary factor exerting downward pressure on precious metals.
Platinum and palladium have also failed to register significant gains despite ongoing geopolitical tensions. Platinum is trading at around US$1,600 per ounce, close to its lowest point since the end of last year. Although supply remains constrained, investors are factoring in the risk of diminished industrial demand, particularly from the automotive sector. Palladium is trading at approximately US$1,260 per ounce.
In addition to the impact of a stronger U.S. dollar, the market is experiencing pressure from weaker demand, driven by the increasing production of electric vehicles and the gradual replacement of palladium with platinum in automotive catalytic converters.
Industrial metals, conversely, have demonstrated greater resilience. Copper remains above US$6.2 per pound, although investor activity has softened in anticipation of the Federal Reserve meeting. Long-term factors continue to underpin the market, including the advancement of artificial intelligence, the construction of data centers, the expansion of energy infrastructure, and the transition to a low-carbon economy. Copper is also supported by supply shortages in China and the potential for production disruptions in Chile due to adverse weather conditions.
Overall, the metals market in July remains influenced by two opposing forces. Geopolitical tensions and rising oil prices are intensifying inflation expectations and exerting pressure on precious metals through the prospect of higher interest rates. Concurrently, industrial metals continue to benefit from long-term demand linked to technological development and the energy transition.
The outcome of the Federal Reserve's meeting and its subsequent signals regarding monetary policy are anticipated to be the pivotal factors shaping the metals market in the coming weeks.
