Man arrested after boat capsizes near Statue of Liberty killing woman and infant
Twelve people were rescued from the water after a large search and rescue operation, police say.
An individual has been taken into custody following a boating accident near the Statue of Liberty that resulted in the deaths of a woman and a five-month-old child. New York police have confirmed the arrest of the boat's operator, who faces charges of reckless endangerment.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday night in the vicinity of New York Harbor, prompted a substantial search and rescue effort, according to authorities. Twelve individuals were successfully pulled from the water.
In addition to the ongoing criminal investigation, Coast Guard officials are looking into whether the vessel was operating as an illegal charter. Details regarding the identities of those on board and the precise reason for the capsizing have not yet been disclosed.
The rescue operation was a multi-agency effort, involving two Coast Guard boats, four fire department boats, two police boats, and a police helicopter, as reported by the US Coast Guard.
Officials stated that the investigation into the incident is continuing. Captain Doreen McCarthy of the Coast Guard expressed gratitude, saying, "We are extremely grateful for the heroic, swift actions of our partner agencies and Good Samaritan vessel who assisted in rescuing survivors from the water."
