Lifelike doll with 'bruises and grazes' sparks mistaken Australian murder inquiry

Australian authorities launched a murder inquiry after mistaking a lifelike doll, complete with "bruises and grazes," for a deceased woman.

The incident began on Sunday afternoon when two men reported discovering a body inside a suitcase by the roadside near Oallen, a small village situated approximately 230km (143 miles) southwest of Sydney.

By Monday, police had publicly announced a murder investigation, generating considerable public attention. However, within hours, officials retracted their statement, confirming that forensic analysis had revealed the contents were not human remains.

Instead, the item was identified as a "lifelike doll, wearing clothing, with hair and a nose piercing," according to police. They further noted that "the item also had markings that resembled bruises and grazes."

Superintendent Linda Bradbury of the Hume Police District explained that the contents of the suitcase were "mistaken for a human originally, so they are very realistic in terms of looking like human remains." She added, "But we've confirmed by other means that they are not."

Bradbury confirmed that forensic teams and investigators had attended the scene on Sunday and that all established protocols were followed. She stated, "The idea is to not disturb crime scenes as much as possible, to maintain the integrity of our investigation," and expressed "no regrets" regarding the handling of the case.

Earlier, Bradbury had described the discovery as "quite a shocking discovery" for the two men who found the suitcase. She noted, "Unfortunately, they were on a weekend drive as a lot of people do over the weekend and stopped for a break."

She commended the pair for making the "right decision" to report their find. "They were affected yesterday and we will be in touch to let them know that it was not human remains," Bradbury said.

Police have since concluded their investigation.
