Gukesh-Sindarov World Championship Match Set for Geneva
The FIDE 2026 World Championship match between Gukesh D. and Uzbekistan’s Javokhir Sindarov will be held in Geneva from 25 November to 15 December.
Geneva to Host Gukesh-Sindarov World Championship Showdown
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) – The FIDE 2026 World Championship match, featuring reigning champion Gukesh D. from India and challenger Javokhir Sindarov of Uzbekistan, is scheduled to take place in Geneva from November 25 to December 15. Both competitors will be 20 years old at the start of the match, making it the youngest World Championship contest ever.
FIDE interim President Viswanathan Anand stated that the organization received multiple bids to host the event, including proposals from India, the United States, and Cyprus. Following a review of these submissions, FIDE chose Geneva as a neutral location. Anand noted that hosting the match in Switzerland will enable local chess enthusiasts to witness top grandmasters in action, while a global audience can follow the competition online.
Andre Vogtlin, President of the Swiss Chess Federation, hailed Geneva's selection as a significant milestone for chess in Switzerland. He expressed that an event of this magnitude would boost the sport's popularity within the country and draw new participants.
Gukesh will be defending the title he secured in Singapore in December 2024. At just 18 years old, the Indian grandmaster defeated China's Ding Liren in the 14th game of their match, becoming the 18th world champion and the youngest titleholder in history.
Sindarov earned his spot in the world championship by winning the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in Cyprus, clinching first place with a round to spare. This victory adds to Sindarov's impressive achievements, following his success at the FIDE World Cup 2025.
The Geneva match will feature two rising stars of the chess world. The championship will comprise 14 classical games, with the first player to reach 7.5 points declared the winner. Should the score be tied after 14 games, a tiebreak will determine the world champion.
