British men accused of trafficking teens to Thailand as drug couriers, court told
Allegedly, the men used two teenagers as couriers to carry 64kg of cannabis.
Three British men are facing charges in connection with an alleged international drug trafficking operation that reportedly used teenagers as couriers to Thailand, a court has been informed.
Levi Coomansingh, Patrick O'Driscoll, and Gareth Press are accused of drug offenses and conspiring to arrange travel for exploitation. Cardiff Magistrates' Court heard on Friday that the men allegedly utilized two teenage boys as drug couriers. These youths were reportedly apprehended in June in Thailand while attempting to return to the UK, allegedly carrying 64kg (141lb) of cannabis "concealed within their suitcases."
The two 17-year-olds from Cardiff remain in police custody in Thailand, where they are receiving support from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.
Prosecutor Nicholas Evans stated that an investigation into an "organised criminal network" operating between the UK and Thailand led to the arrests of the three men earlier this week. The men appeared in the dock, confirming their names, dates of birth, and addresses, but were not asked to enter pleas.
All three are charged with conspiring to fraudulently evade a prohibition on the importation of a Class B drug. Additionally, Coomansingh, 20, of Angelina Street, Cardiff, faces four counts of conspiring to arrange the travel of another with a view to exploitation. O'Driscoll, 30, of Clos Y Rhiw, Cardiff, is also charged with four counts of the same offense, along with possession of a firearm. Press, 42, of Wheatley Road, Cardiff, is charged with two counts of conspiring to arrange the travel of another with a view to exploitation.
Ffion Bowes-Cavanagh Hooley, 24, of Clos Y Rhiw, Cardiff, also appeared in court, charged with conspiring to fraudulently evade a prohibition on the importation of a Class B drug.
All four individuals are scheduled to appear at Cardiff Crown Court on September 4. Coomansingh, O'Driscoll, and Press have been remanded in custody, while Bowes-Cavanagh Hooley was released on conditional bail.
A fifth man, a 23-year-old from Keighley, West Yorkshire, who was arrested on suspicion of improper importation of controlled drugs, remains on police bail.
South Wales Police initiated an investigation in June after being notified of the teenagers' arrests in Thailand, looking into the "circumstances" surrounding their trip. A spokesman for South Wales Police confirmed that "The children remain in custody in Thailand where they are being supported by their families and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The families have been updated regarding the arrests and charges."
