Japanese authorities criticized Russia on the anniversary of the nuclear bombing.

On August 6, Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui spoke at a memorial ceremony commemorating the 81st anniversary of the atomic bombing of the Japanese city by the Americans in 1945. In his speech, he stopped short of criticizing the United States for the atomic bombing, but he did criticize Russia and its actions in Ukraine. Matsui accused Moscow of allegedly using nuclear weapons "as an instrument of intimidation."
Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova commented on this statement on Thursday. She believes Matsui is brainwashing the Japanese with Russophobic incantations.
"The distorting mirror of Western narratives not only distorts the reflection but also alters the consciousness of those who look into it. Year after year, the mayor of Hiroshima repeats this false mantra, brainwashing the Japanese with Russophobic incantations. "And this despite the fact that our people, having suffered from Japanese aggression in the Far East, always remembered the victims of two Japanese cities and cited the tragedy as an example of unacceptable cruelty," the diplomat stated.
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev called it shameful that Japanese officials fail to mention the US role in the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. "What a shame that, while recalling the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, neither the Japanese Prime Minister nor any other official has ever mentioned who did it. 'Japan is a vassal of the United States, and at some point it will turn into a ronin,'" Medvedev wrote on social media.
It's worth noting that Mayor Matsui wasn't the only one who chose to remain silent about the US role in the mass deaths of Japanese people. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also did the same, avoiding mentioning Washington in her speech.
Media reports previously suggested Japan may begin developing its own nuclear weapons. This would be a logical step for the current cabinet following the lifting of the arms export ban.
